The healthcare industry is one of the few who remains to be stable in the time of crisis. Medical professions keep on asking for reinforcements every now and then. It seems that the need for certified and accredited medical practitioners does not decline in number through time. The demand gets even higher, and being an x-ray technician or technologist is on top of the list.
An x-ray technician is a healthcare worker that is tech-savvy in the area of managing x-ray equipment. They’re as good as engineers are with building and bridges. They take pictures of the inside body to help doctors visualize and diagnose diseases, conditions or injury. An x-ray technician is trained for a year or two before they are certified to work on different medical areas. They can work in hospital’s, physician’s offices, dental offices, radiology clinics and a lot more. The downside of working as an x-ray technician for an extended period of time is that constant exposure to x-rays can develop certain diseases such as cancer. That’s why x-ray technicians take safety precautions such as wearing lead sheets or clothing to minimize the exposure.
Training to be an x-ray technician usually takes place in trade schools. Most of them easily picks up on how to operate fixed and moveable x-ray equipment. They also learn how to develop the pictures and help position the patients to ensure the best pictures are taken. Some of the x-ray technicians pursue further studies and they learn how to sonograms, magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs), and computerized axial tomography scans.
This profession demands an x-ray technician to be patient and professional in dealing with people as there may be patients that are uncooperative and or people who are unable to due to illness, injury and disorder. An x-ray technician must possess a collected and helpful character and is willing to extend service especially to those who are resistant and in pain.
X-ray technicians are not allowed to discuss the findings of an x-ray with a patient. It is imperative that they leave that task to a radiologist, doctor, nurse practitioner or a physician’s assistant. Though a skilled x-ray technician should be able to spot possible problems on an x-ray image, they should not go into details about it with the patients. Patients should respect x-ray technicians by not asking the latter to explain to them their x-ray findings. A radiologist or doctor will discuss and explain it to them at a scheduled time.
Most x-ray technicians are expected to work under extreme pressure especially if patients are in pain or having serious illnesses. It’s very important for them to know what the goal of their job is,and that is to create vivid and clear pictures of problems so that doctors or dentists can solve them. X-ray technicians play an important role in the diagnostic area of the medical world. It is also important to remember that the term x-ray tech is used to refer to both x-ray technicians and x-ray technologists. X-ray technologists have more training as compared to x-ray technicians, that’s why they also have supervisory responsibilities and duties.
Because of the high demand for radiology technicians, it is no doubt as to why the average radiology tech salary is so rewarding. There are other factors besides job demand that will play a large role in annual salaries. Variables such as economy, job location, job experience and training. If you are considering a medical job with great reward, consider one in the radiology field as an x ray technician.
