Ultrasound technicians are the professionals who are able to use and operate the sonogram and work with doctors and nurses to find a diagnosis for your ailment.
The use of the ultrasound machine as a means to diagnose patients has always been preferred by many healthcare practitioners for its’ practicality and safety. The ultrasound machine is readily available in almost all healthcare facilities as it is clearly an indispensable tool for diagnosis. Patients are more than willing to participate in this diagnostic exam as it requires very little preparation in the part of the patient. Patients do not need to be admitted to the hospital for the procedure, there is no recovery period as it is performed on an outpatient setting, the procedure is relatively quick, and best of all: it is painless.
The work of an ultrasound technician requires a lot of fiddling with buttons and wires. It is a job that involves not only technical jargon, but also medical terminology as well. Unlike other jobs in the diagnostic field that expose technicians to harmful rays, the job of an ultrasound technician is relatively free from dangerous exposure.
The salary of ultrasound technicians can rage from $40,000- $60,000. This range is usually the result of a combination of the technician’s education, experience and the type of facility he works for. There are a lot of things that can affect an ultrasound technician’s salary; even the location where he works is an important factor.
Aspiring ultrasound technicians can look for schools that are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs. Schools that are accredited by the CAAHEP are ideal as their graduates will be able to obtain certification in order to become licensed. There are 2 educational pathways to take. One leads to an associate’s degree and takes only two years to accomplish. The other one, bachelor’s degree, requires 4 years to finish. The difference between the two is that the bachelor’s degree holder earns a higher salary and would be privileged enough to sit in an administrative position someday.
Students are taught how to handle the ultrasound machine, learn about the medical terminologies, and study basic subjects that include anatomy and physiology, ethics, patient care, biology and physics.
Most employers only require their future employees to have an associate’s degree in order to begin working, but all of them do require certification from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Some states do not require their employees to pass the state licensure exam, but to be sure, you can check out your states local board website for more information regarding the matter.
